A visit to the Gardens will give students a better understanding of:

  • The important roles of plants as producers/providers in the environment
  • The importance of plants in our lives
  • The diversity of plants
  • The role of the Gardens in conserving rare and threatened plant species.

Students will also gain a sense of ownership and appreciation of the Gardens and of our natural environment.

This teaching and learning resource is designed to help teachers make the best use of the Ballarat Botanical Gardens as an excursion venue for school students. The kit provides:
  • Information on how to arrange a visit
  • Suitable activities during the visit as well as preparation and followup
  • Guide notes and a map for the Education Trail suitable for an adult to explain to a group of students
  • Resources for further information

The development of the Ballarat Botanical Gardens Education Kit was a joint project funded by Parks Victoria Community Grants Scheme, the City of Ballarat and The Friends of the Ballarat Botanical Gardens Inc. Although structured for the Curriculum and Standards Framework (CSF) in 2001 the content could be easily be adapted for today's Victoria Essential Learning Standards (VELS).

Ballarat Tramway Museum is a long term tenant of the Ballarat Botanical Gardens. Volunteers operate a service with vintage trams along Wendouree Parade at weekends and during the school holidays. An Education Kit which is available free of charge when a school booking is made to visit the museum. Tramway Education Kit
